Colloquial Arabic of the Gulf and Saudi Arabia
Resource Category: Language Resource
Description: Colloquial Arabic is a practical course in everyday Arabic as it is used in the area extending from Basra in Southern Iraq through Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, the U.A.E. to Oman. Requiring no prior knowledge of the language, the course is ideal for everyone seeking to develop a sound command of contemporary gulf Arabic whether studying independently or with a teacher.
Editorial Board Review: This book is designed to help learners develop a “working knowledge” of Gulf Arabic and assumes no prior knowledge of the language. The book begins with a pronunciation guide and pronunciations drills (on audiotape) to help learners develop a feel for the sounds of the language.
The book contains twenty units, review units, an answer key, and an appendix that deals with some phonological phenomena such as consonant and vowel alterations. The units are organized structurally (not functionally) and thus have titles such as “simple descriptive sentences,” “relative clauses,” “the present participle,” etc. Each unit provides vocabulary lists, grammatical explanations and drills of the reading aloud and translation type. Some drills are recorded on tape for further listening. The last unit presents abridged extracts from a ‘black comedy’ broadcast for comprehension and translation.
