Arabic Today: A Student, Business, and Professional Course in Spoken and Written Arabic
Resource Category: Language Resource
Description: For business professionals and students needing to communicate directly with the modern Arab World, Arabic Today provides a unique self-contained course in contemporary Arabic. Based on the new emerging form of spoken Pan-Arabic, and using the everyday language of the professional in the office or the factory, on the phone or on paper, Arabic Today teaches the student how to handle spoken and written Arabic with ease and confidence. The book includes an introduction, a part on transliteration and phonology, an answer key for the exercises, and indexes of English and Arabic words.
Editorial Board Review: This textbook is for professionals and students who want to communicate directly with people and institutions. According to the author, it is suitable both for classroom and self-instruction. It combines spoken (colloquial) and written (standard) Arabic, but in two separate parts. Spoken Arabic (Pt. I) comprises 14 lessons, each based on a dialogue between Peter, an Englishman, and one or more Arabs. Transliteration is used, accompanied by an English translation. Written Arabic (Pt. II) contains 11 lessons on various topics. Each begins with key vocabulary and model sentences. Supplemental vocabulary follows. Both parts include brief grammar notes. The author does not indicate whether a background in Arabic is needed in order to use this textbook. The textbook is accompanied with an audio program.
