Description: |
This course is designed for students who have completed a first-level course in Arabic and wish to pursue the subject to degree level. It aims to develop thoroughly the four basic language skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening, making extensive use of authentic Arabic materials. Each of the twenty chapters is based around a particular topic relating to the culture, history, politics, geography or society of the Arab Middle East, to give students an insight into important aspects of the region. This topic-based approach allows students to tackle vocabulary and structures in a coherent and concentrated manner. Each chapter contains materials for translation into and from Arabic, aural texts, precis passages, suggested oral discussion topics, and a variety of exercises including comprehension in English and Arabic. Accompanying cassettes, a teacher's handbook, and answer key are available. |
| Editorial Board Review: |
This textbook contains twenty lessons, each focusing on a single topic related to some political, historical, social, cultural or geographical aspect of the Arab Middle East. Each lesson begins with background material, which can be a graphic (e.g., a map) or a text in English. Additional readings in English follow, with references to resources. Learners are heavily involved in developing their own vocabulary, creating lists from the reading passages, each one for a prescribed category. The sections on written Arabic contain passages ranging from simple, edited texts up to classical ones selected for relevance to the chapter topic. Questions in English or Arabic follow every passage.A section on grammar and stylistics contains explanatory notes on items found in the written passage. Exercise formats include clozes, content questions, and structure translation. The latter contain English sentences whose translation would yield Arabic sentences similar to those in the reading passages. |
