Resource Category: Cultural Resource
Description: This "Handbook for Educators" comprises four sections: 1) "About Islam and Muslims," the largest part of the publication, is in a question-answer format grouped under the headings of Introduction (an example of a question here is "Where do Muslims live throughout the world?"); Basic Beliefs (e.g. "How is God viewed in Islam?"); Religious Obligations--The Five Pillars (e.g. "What is said in the Muslim formal worship?"); The Muslim Society (e.g. "What is the role of Shari`ah today?" and "What does Islam say about suicide and euthanasia?"); 2) "Teaching with Sensitivity" offers information about how to teach about religion in the classroom, language issues stemming from Arabic transliteration and Muslim names, religious needs of Muslim students regarding issues such as fasting and mixing of the sexes, and Islamic holidays; 3) "Recommended Resources" includes a wealth of titles on Islam, comprising written materials for the teacher and student as well as video, audio, and Internet resources; and 4) the "Quick Reference Glossary" is a helpful list of names and terms related to Islam and how to pronounce them.
Editorial Board Review: This useful and informative book presents Islam as Muslims view their faith.
