Description: |
The author states, "My task has been to locate as many texts of oral tales as possible, both old and new, and sift through them carefully for stories representative of what has been told in the Arab world over the last hundred years" (p. 382). The result is a rich collection of stories, both short and long, that reflect the celebrated tradition of storytelling in Arab culture. They are grouped in categories such as Bedouin Tales, Tales of Magic and the Supernatural, Animal Tales, Stories of Djuha, Religious Tales and Moral Instructions, and Tales of Wit and Wisdom. Each section begins with an insightful essay that provides a social and cultural context for the stories. |
| Editorial Board Review: |
For more advanced Arabic students, some of the shorter stories (for example, the Djuha tales) can be assigned for translation (from English to Arabic). It is also possible to develop a short play for classroom performance, based on the stories. This collection represents a huge and commendable effort on the part of the author-editor. Her English renditions of the tales are excellently written, and her analyses of the cultural context of the tales is insightful and enriching. |
