Arab World Mosaic: A Curriculum Supplement for Elementary Teachers
Resource Category: Cultural Resource
Description: This book offers six units of discrete elements of various Arab lives. The goal of these units is to provide resource material for elementary school teachers that helps in understanding and appreciating multiculturalism. The units cover the following topics: Who am I, exploration of family and community, plants and animals, and holidays and celebrations. Also, the book presents folktales and stories.
Editorial Board Review: The units in this book consist of several lessons. The lessons describe for teachers the objectives, material required, and instructional procedures. It also has a special section called “cultural notes.” Furthermore, the lessons provide explanations of some cultural practices. The lesson plans helps students understand the Arab world through regular classroom tasks such as reading, writing, and art. Although the book provides insightful information about various Arabic backgrounds, it seems that village life is over-represented to the neglect of the city and other vital aspects of Arab lives. In that respect, the book might enhance the stereotypical view of Arabs. The material has been collected from Dearborn, Michigan.
